Text and photos by Jeff Greene The city of Baku, the capitol of Azerbaijan, located below the Caucasus Mountains on the edge of the Caspian Sea, is a fascinating blend of east and west, old and new. In the late 1800s, numerous “oil barons’ mansions” were built alongside the existing ancient Islamic walled city in a strange mixture of architectural styles that mixed European classical, Art Nouveau with Persian eclecticism. Since the collapse of the Soviet Union 20 years ago, Baku has experienced another oil-fueled building boom of modern skyscrapers. But nothing seems to capture the essence of the Azerbaijan psyche the way that traditional Mugham music does. Click here to read the rest of the article. DECEMBER 4 , 2010 Jeff Greene Article in DooBeDooBeDoo The Uighur Dolan Maqam called the Chinese Desert Jazz! Text and photos by Jeff Greene Late last year, there was an article on the front page of The NY Times about the planned demolition of large sections of the ancient silk road city, Kashgar, in western China. I decided I should go before it was gone. An Uzbek friend had invited me to his arranged wedding in Samarkand, and I figured that was all the excuse I needed to go to Central Asia. New Year’s Day WBAI 99.5 FM at 7am Jeff Greene—Jew's harp nyckleharpa, and Chinese flute John Kruth—mandolin, penny whistle, and Andalusian shepherd flutes Ibrahim Gonzalez—halo AUGUST 27, 2009 Strange Cousin Reviewed in Huffington Post Ian Merkel of Modiba, a social-activist international music company based in New York City, wrote a wonderful article, "TriBeCaStan In Manhattan Unleashes Uzbek Lutes, Pakistani Taxi Horns, And Six Foot Shepherd's Pipes," for the Huffington Post. "Welcome to TriBeCaStan, a country without borders tucked away in a corner of downtown Manhattan. "Trying to describe TriBeCaStan's music or relegating it to a genre would be incredibly difficult, and, as the artists would contend, futile. Greene commonly describes it as intergalactic, but not so much in the Sun Ra extraterrestrial kind of way. This music is really about the cross-fertilization of musical idioms that Kruth and Greene have been exposed to in their travels, and the ways in which these idioms allow them to express the diversity that surrounds them in their very own New York. Some have asked why they play 'peasant music in an affluent zip code,' and their music has responded with the idea that homogeny is neither representative for our present nor characteristic of a progressive future." Jeff Greene grew up listening to music, from the blues in his boyhood Chicago to the eastern modal music he encountered hitchhiking across the Sahara Desert as a teenager. When a project in Nashville led him to rediscover American roots music, he dug a little deeper and traced it back to its Celtic traditions, which in turn led to a whole world of folk music from all over Europe—back through the Balkans and Klezmer music, back to the Ottoman Empire and beyond, to Persia and the Indian subcontinent . . . and back again to jazz, that uniquely American musical invention. As this curiosity grew into an insatiable pursuit, Jeff started EverGreene Music as a way for each of us to explore our heritage and celebrate each of these diverse musical influences. One lifetime is simply too short to explore them all. An open mind is all that’s required.
