When you hitch a ride with TriBeCaStan, you never know where you’re going to land. Drawing liberally from jazz, world music, and Americana, their new holiday EP, The Twisted Christmas, is a collection of your favorite Christmas songs, merrily reinterpreted with exotic cheer, unexpected instrumentations, and mischievous smirks.

Built on Ray Peterson’s bouncy, growling bass riff and a pair of galloping congas played by Boris Kinberg, “Do You Hear The Silent Night?” busts out of the gate like a runaway sleigh as Chris Morrow’s blaring trombone and Jeff Greene’s exotic yayli tambor (a Turkish hybrid of cello and banjo) weave the melody together. Do You Hear What I Hear? momentarily morphs into Silent Night until, once more, the band shifts gears when John Kruth’s sitar and recorder you for a psychedelic detour where we come face to face with the Ghost of Christmas Past (played by Brian Jones) before returning again to the opening hook as Kruth (overjoyed on high test eggnog) mumbles some jazzy jive with visions of Christmas trees and flying saucers in his head.

Todd Isler kicks off “Joy To The Angels” with a killer drum fill as Kenny Margolis punches short choppy chords on a cheesy Farfisa, while Greene reaches once more into his sonic spice box for a bit of Caribbean flava with the sweet clang of his steel drums. Morrow’s trombone slips and slides while Kruth chunks rhythm on a banjo, turning these old Xmas chestnuts into a rollicking Rasta romp until Peterson’s fat bass throb leads TriBeCastan into a Spike Jones’ funhouse of dub where riffs leap out at you like strange cousins trying to drag you under the mistletoe.

Like a department store Kriss Kringle filled with holiday cheer, “Santa, Noel Ye Faithful” momentarily stumbles and stomps around in big puddles of sonic slush before finding its footing in an ebullient Burt Bacharach groove reminiscent of “Do You Know The Way To San Jose?” As the TriBeCaStani Boys Choir don their gay apparel, Kruth picks the melody on his mandolin while Greene decks the hall with some mellifluous marimba (honestly, what’s the holiday season without a bit of marimba?) until once more the Christmas cheer seems to overwhelm our happy band of carolers and they find themselves in The Twilight Zone with Art Carney and his bottomless bag of presents.

Last but not least, TriBeCaStan takes us on a midnight joyride across the desert sands with “God Rest Ye Three Kings,” a figgy pudding of hand drums, sitar, sarod, mandocello, brass and bulbul tarang.

With a tongue in cheek amalgam of yule tide spirit and holiday chutzpah, The Twisted Christmas is a change of pace from the standard seasonal-tunes of old.

Biography:

Even though there’s no easy way to describe the distinctive sound of TriBeCaStan, it hasn’t prevented people from trying! The Washington Post, for example, describes Tribecastan as sounding like “an international jazz and folk festival unto itself, fusing Balkan, Middle Eastern, Indian, Latin American, and African musical elements to bold and dazzling effect.” TimeOut New York tries it this way: “Downtown-loft improv with the odd trace of Appalachian blues? Yep. Cinematic fusion jazz filtered through a North African lens? Ditto. Multiculti urban folk music steeped in Balkan, Cajun, klezmer, Gypsy and classical Indian flavors? Absolutely.”

However you describe it, the final package is the result of an exuberant, and sometimes irreverent, collaborative effort of some of New York’s finest world music and jazz veterans. TriBeCaStan’s members have played with everyone from James Brown, Ornette Coleman, and Patti Smith, to the Meat Puppets, The Violent Femmes, and Taj Mahal, and it shows. Together, the band has found a way to combine an almost unprecedented diversity of styles into a singularly adventurous music that is legitimately global, virtuosic, and infectious.

TriBeCaStan latest album, New Deli, peaked at #3 on the CMJ World charts, and their albums and live performances have consistently garnered rave reviews from heavy hitters such the New York Times, The Washington Post, TimeOut New York, The Huffington Post, The Village Voice, and many more. Recent performances include (Le) Poisson Rouge, Joe’s Pub, and DROM in New York; a 2012 APAP Showcase; festival appearances at Brooklyn’s GoldenFest and upstate New York’s Mohonk Mountain House Arts Festival; as well as an impromptu 2011 tour of Russia (incl. Siberia).
